The branch of Physics which deals with the composition of nucleus characteristics of nucleus and stability of a nucleus is called nuclear physics.

Nucleus - 

Most denser and Central part of an atom discovered by Rutherford.
With the help of Alpha particle gold foil experiment, Rutherford proves that volume of the nucleus is directly proportional to the mass of the nucleus.

Mass defect

Mass of A nucleus is always less than the sum of masses of nucleons in it. This difference of mass is called a mass defect. The energy equivalent to this mass defect called binding energy and binding energy is that energy which binds nucleon inside the nucleus.
The energy required to break the nucleus or separate protons and neutrons is equal to binding energy.

Binding energy per nucleon indicate stability of nucleus, it is maximum in Fe nucleus. B.E.P.N curve represents that medium size nuclei are more stable than heavy and light nuclei.

Nuclear reaction

Conservation of charge.
Conservation of mass number.
Conservation of energy or mass.
Conservation of Linear and angular momentum.

Nuclear fission

The splitting of a heavy nucleus into small almost equal mass nuclei and a huge amount of energy are released such type of nuclear reaction is called Nuclear Fission reaction.
In nuclear fission, there is always a mass defect nearly 1%
Once the fission reaction starts it proceeds in forwarding direction spontaneously and produce neutrons again participate in fission process it is called a nuclear chain reaction.

Nuclear force

The strong attraction between the nucleons which hold the nucleons inside the nucleus is called nuclear force.

The nuclear force is the strongest force and very short range for only exist inside the nucleus.In nuclear force attraction and repulsion, both components are present.The nuclear force is charge and mass independent.The nuclear force depends on the direction of spin.

Nuclear Force does not obey Inverse Square Law and principle of superposition and it is a non-Central and non-conservative force.
