Energy Band

In the case of simply isolated atom the electrons in any orbit have definite amount of energy and outer energy electron have more energy than their inner, these certain value of energy is called Energy level, and atom in solid is influenced by closely packed neighboring atoms therefore electrons in any orbit of such an atom have arrange of energies rather than a single energy because of electron is revolving under the influence of various forces so the range of energies possessed by an electron is said is called energy band.

The semiconductor has a crystalline structure and formed by a covalent bond.

N-Type Semiconductor

When a Pentavalent semiconductor is added in a pure semiconductor such impurity is called donor impurity and free electrons are majority charge carrier and holes are minority charge carrier such type semiconductor is called N-type Semiconductor.

P-Type Semiconductor

When a trivalent impurity is added in semiconductor it is called acceptor impurity or holes. The hole is the majority charge carrier and the free electron is minority charge carrier such type of semiconductor is called P-Type Semiconductor. 

P-N Type Semiconductor

A PN junction diode is formed on a single crystal of semiconductor by injecting P type and N type impurity from opposite ends.

1 As the PN Junction diode is formed majority charge carrier diffused from higher concentrated region to lower concentrated region so a current flows it is called diffusion current and it flows from P to N.

3 The potential difference across depletion layer is called potential barrier and developed electric field barrier and Developed electric field is called junction field.

4 Initially diffusion current is very large but as depletion region grows diffusion current decrease and drift current increase and after a very short time diffusion current and drift currently becomes equal, Net current is zero and a constant depletion region is formed.
